It debuted on NBC on December 14, 2009, and is produced by Sony Pictures Television and Outlaw Productions, with Mark Burnett's One Three Media being added for the fourth season. It is hosted by Nick Lachey, with judges Ben Folds, Shawn Stockman, and originally Nicole Scherzinger, later replaced by Sara Bareilles. Bareilles left the show after one season and was replaced by Jewel. The show's music staff all came from the a cappella community: Deke Sharon, Bill Hare, Ed Boyer, Ben Bram, Robert Dietz, Christopher Diaz and Nick Girard. A cappella groups from the United States, including Puerto Rico, were chosen by audition and advanced in the competition based on judges' eliminations until the finale, with the winners being determined by viewer votes. The program has featured guest appearances by various popular artists, including Bobby McFerrin, Natasha Bedingfield, Jay Sean, Smokey Robinson, Neil Diamond, Boyz II Men, and Sara Bareilles. The Sing-Off was renewed for a third season and started airing much earlier on September 19, 2011, although the first two series had been broadcast in December. Unlike previous seasons, the early start in September allowed for the production of more episodes and the number of participant groups increased.

You Can Sing 2003

Carrie and David Grant – vocal coaches to stars including Melanie C and Will Young show the nation "there’s a singer in all of us" with their first ever DVD – You Can Sing - which contains invaluable guidance and technique tips that will help anyone to sing. For the first exciting time you will have a chance to step behind the spotlight with Carrie and David Grant, the UK’s leading pop vocal coaches and discover the vocal training techniques that train superstars to improve their voices. This incredibly talented husband and wife team, whose client list is testament to their outstanding skill, demonstrate methods that can show the most tuneless how to sing and enhance the technique of the gifted. You might be a budding diva or a total beginner but that doesn’t matter, You Can Sing will benefit anyone who has a passion for bursting into song. Whether you want to sing on stage or in the shower, professionally or for pleasure, You Can Sing will show you all the techniques and skills to help achieve your own personal goals in seven easy steps. Step 1 – Doing What Comes Naturally - Breathing as an extension to singing Step 2 – Getting Started - Warm-up posture and forward placement Step 3 – In the Right Place - The distinct parts of your voice Step 4 – Aiming High - Discover your vocal range Step 5 – Taking the Lows - Your low tones Step 6 - Flexing - Crescendo, diminuendo, vibrato and ad-libbing Step 7 – It’s Show Time - Interpret a song for the best performance Aimed principally at those who love posing in front of their bedroom mirror pretending they're the next Madonna or Robbie, You Can Sing is a bluffers' guide to singing pop. The main feature follows teenagers Danni and Peter as they receive coaching from two of the UK's leading pop-vocal coaches, Carrie and David Grant. Unlike the cut-throat competition of Pop Idol and Fame Academy, this is a cosy step-by-step guide to singing, with the Grants adopting cuddly teacher personas. The two students are not your everyday pop wannabes either, having seemingly been dragged in from stage school rather than the street. The feature climaxes with the pair putting into practice Carrie and David's seven steps to success (ranging from breathing technique to vocal range) by professionally recording tracks such as Williams's "Angels" and Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful". The show includes advice from some of the Grants' most recent and successful students—among them Will Young, Melanie C and Lemar--and there are also brief guidance segments on topics such as whether it's safe to sing with a cold. Critics might say that a programme such as this simply encourages more second-rate karaoke singers to dream of pop stardom; but at the very least it might ensure that future pop-reality shows aren't short of talent. On the DVD: You Can Sing's somewhat lacklustre main feature is boosted by the interactivity of the extra material included on the disc. The songs "Angels" and "Beautiful" can be practised at home in karaoke-fashion, with the lyrics flashed on to the screen. There's also the opportunity to feel what it's like to perform in front of a roaring live crowd. The interviews with the star graduate can be watched in their entirety via the bonus material menu and the short feature on correctly holding a hair brush as if it is a microphone is fun and informative.--John Galilee
